Fireworks Season is upon us!!
Most animals are terrified of loud noises, especially when it is time for firework season! Bonfire night and new year are a time of celebration for us, but for our pets it is the worst time of the year. Many pets will be found hidden under the bed, shaking and salivating. Others will bark, growl or hiss at the loud noises outside and some will even become aggressive due to being so scared. It is also at these times of year that many pets who have not been secured inside will run away. Sometimes pets will even be injured by traffic or falling due to becoming very panicked by the fireworks.
It used to be thought that by sedating animals with medication prescribed by the vet was the best way to cope with this time in the year. However, all this actually does is make owners feel better as their pets do not look as stressed. These pets will still be just as anxious and frightened or even more so, they are just not able to react to it. Now there are better ways to help your pet get used to the noises and feel safe during this time.
It is best to start considering how to help your companion through this difficult period now. Although it is a couple of months before the fireworks are going to start, it is around this time that it is best to intervene and work with your pet to help get them over their noise phobias so they can cope with these stressful periods in their life.
The next four months are Fireworks months here at Holly House Vets. There will be consultations available with our clinic nurse, Sheryl, to help you and your pet find out about the different things available to overcome noise phobias. By coming to a noise phobia consultation, you will also be entitled to a free information pack and discounts off many of the products that will be recommended to you, including the Sounds Scary CD, ADAPtil and Feliway.
To book your consultation with our clinic nurse or to find out more about our Fireworks Months, please speak to reception or our clinic nurse, Sheryl.
