K-laser Treatment

What is a K-laser?

K-laser Class IV therapeutic lasers deliver specific red and near-infrared wavelengths of laser light to induce a photochemical reaction and therapeutic effect. Physiological effects include increased circulation, reduced inflammation, pain reduction and enhanced tissue healing.

During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain. As the injured area returns to normal, function is restored and pain is relieved.

During K-laser Therapy, infrared laser light interacts with tissues at the cellular level increasing metabolic activity within the cell. By improving the transport of nutrients across the cell membrane, the increased production of cellular energy (ATP) is stimulated. The cascade of beneficial effects that follows includes increased cellular function and tissue repair.

Specific conditions that could benefit from K-laser therapy:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Chronic pain
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Following orthopaedic surgery
  • Gingivitis
  • Wounds
  • Acute and chronic skin conditions
  • Abscesses
  • Burns
  • Aural haematoma
  • Asthma
  • Following surgery to speed up healing of incision

Osteoarthritis – the K-laser can be used as an alternative to or in conjunction with anti-inflammatory medications. It often allows animals already on anti-inflammatory medications to benefit from a dose reduction, meaning a reduced risk of unwanted side-effects.

Following orthopaedic surgery – the K-laser can be used to speed up the healing following an orthopaedic surgery resulting in a more rapid recovery time

Following surgery – the K-laser can speed up the healing of the surgical incision following an operation. This results in less time wearing the buster collar and a quicker return to full fitness.

The K-laser Treatments

The K-laser treatment is carried out by one of our Registered Veterinary Nurses after being recommended by a vet. Depending on the exact treatment that has been prescribed, each treatment takes between four to eight minutes. It is recommended that you stay with your pet during the treatment. The treatment is not painful, most pets actually enjoy it!

The number of treatments required will depend on the reason for the K-laser being prescribed. For arthritis and gingivitis we usually recommend two treatments a week for three weeks. For acute injuries or wounds we normally recommend using the K-laser on alternate days until the problem has resolved.

Client Testimonials

“The day after the operation Dilan had the first of six laser treatments. He was putting weight on his leg within two days! Dilan coped excellently with these. In summary the recovery process is going very well and the scar is healing brilliantly. We could not wish for any more."

- Dilan's owner

“Although my cat Jackson is only 1 year old, he was a rescue born to feral cats and unfortunately carries calicivirus. This has resulted in him having smelly breath and gingivitis, which would only become worse over time and may result in him losing teeth.

It was suggested that a course of K-Laser treatment might be beneficial. Six treatments were given over a 3-week period, each taking four minutes. The nurse who administered the treatments was wonderful, very gentle and caring and Jackson tolerated them well.

But the best part is, after two treatments his breath was already much less pungent, after four it was hardly noticeable and on completion it was gone completely. His gums are now a healthy pink with no inflammation.

I would highly recommend the K Laser and would not hesitate to repeat the treatment if necessary for Jackson."

- Jackson's owner

Further information about the K laser can be found at the following website.

Alternatively, your vet would be happy to discuss this treatment with you further.
